The Most Common Reasons Why Your Kids Don’t Listen to You

Kids not listening to the parents and making them repeat the same thing several times is a story that runs in almost every household. Yes, we completely understand how it feels when you try all your tricks to make your little one listen to you, but it all goes in vain. It surely must be frustrating and a patience-tester. But what if we ask you how many of you have actually tried to identify the reason behind this?

The fact is that no matter how small your child is, he is just as much human as you are! They also like to do things their own way. As such, if the child is engrossed in playing and you ask him to do another task, he might just ignore and rebel. Many times, kids choose not to listen if they are engaged in something which seems more interesting to them or is comparatively more convenient than what you are asking them to do. It is hence very important that before you lose your calm, you try and analyze the reason behind the child portraying such a behavior.

To help ease it out for you, we, at Delhi Public School, Kota, one of the top schools in Kota, have listed below some of the most common reasons why your kids might not be listening to you and what you can do about that.

  • Conversing with them when they are involved in some other task

If you talk to your child when they are busy doing something else, your words are more likely to fall on deaf ears. Hence, when talking to your child, make sure they look at you and maintain eye contact. Make the conversation exciting and connect with them. They will surely listen to what you say when you have their full attention.

  • Talking in a harsh and loud tone with your child

We understand that if your child is constantly throwing tantrums and is being stubborn, it is only natural to lose your cool and get irritated. But if you get angry and shout, they will rebel more and start ignoring you. Hence, try and maintain your cool as much as you can and talk to them gently. Talk in a tone that makes them feel loved and cared for.

  • Consistently criticizing them and finding faults

Being a parent, you have a lot of responsibilities towards your child. Right from ensuring that they finish their breakfast and get ready for school on time, to making sure that they are tucked in bed to sleep right on time, you have to constantly chase your little ones for everything. However, it might so happen at times that the child is just not in a mood to do that task and thus chooses not to get up and get going in the direction you want him to. However, even when a situation is like that, make sure that instead of criticizing and finding faults, you turn to appreciating them and talking good about them aloud. This helps capture the child’s interest in what you have to say, and they would willingly do the tasks on time to earn more appreciation from you.

  • Being too authoritative

As parents, you want your children to be disciplined and obedient. As such, we understand if you are always willing to keep an eye on them and trying to control their actions. However, children like to have things their way. If you try to be overtly authoritative and bossy, they won’t like it and would choose not to listen to you. The best way out is to let them make choices whenever it’s safe and possible, and also be there to guide them whenever required.

All said and done; there’s one thing that you all have to agree to – They are just KIDS! And as such, it is okay if they don’t listen to you at times. After all, they are still growing and have their own share of mood swings and behavioral changes. Just make sure you remain available for them. They must know you always have their back. Be more empathetic and more patient towards them. Give them time to learn and adjust to things. We, at DPS Kota, ranked among the top schools in Kota, are certain that if you keep hold of your patience and calm and keep the aforementioned pointers in mind, you will soon be able to mould your kids into active listeners.
